Amor/Amen
Siempre

Christmas days.
Miguel's parents went to Machu Picchu after Ollantaytambo, but Michael and I went to Cusco to wait and work. On Friday the 21 was the buffet, and on Saturday the 22 was the Christmas party for the children of Yanapay. After this party we went to a pub with a spectacular live band. The pub was very small but we danced and danced and danced. Sunday the 23 was a day off and Michael and his parents went to the city to see the cathedrals and museums while I tried to complete a part of my public health workshop. (As such I learned a looooooooot about this topic and I'll put the most important quotes below - Unfortunately in English). This day Michael and I cooked about 7 pizzas for the family and started to show all of our photos. The pizzas were .... interesting. I'll describe them in the photos. Finally, this day was very important because I had a skype conversation with a good friend.Monday was a big fair called Santuranticuy where other Yanapay volunteers sold cakes to make money for Yanapay. In Peru the most important day of Christmas is the holy night (Christmas Eve). I went to Mass with my mom here (called Emma) and it was awesome because I finally understand the message. He told us that when we are actually celebrating Christmas we celebrate Christ. And, the most important thing, we should celebrate Christ every day! Christmas is an excuse, but we should not need an excuse. Then, he talked about how we do this: we must practice peace, happy, justice, and love every day. With these actions we celebrate Christ. Of course, the four seem easy, but I'm learning how much I'm missing to do them well. We will discuss what I have learned in my recent weeks in another blog.
Imediately after Mass I ran to the house of Yuri's mother to arrive on time for a wonderful party and gift exchange. Miguel and I danced until 5. I spoke with good friends for what was probably for the last time. It was a perfect night. At last we had Christmas with family. We give gifts, we made chocolate, ate turkey. At night we played pictionary in Spanish again, and this was good fun. :)
Christmas was a little sad for me. I tried to do skype with my family but the connection was terrible. I could understand and see only 25% of what happened. It was very frustrating, but when Michael's parents came and we started talking and playing together was better, but the truth is I miss my family.
In any case, there are photos. a lot of photos. :)

"All developed countries have a vital and direct stake in the health of people around the world; this stake derives both from enduring traditions of humanitarian concern and from compelling reasons of enlightened self-interest. Considered involvement can serve to protect citizens, improve indigenous economies, and advance national and regional interests on the world stage."

Healthcare professionals are looked to for leadership in matters related to the health of individuals and communities. Given the close association between health and economic development, health leaders must therefore become as much advocates for the latter as much as they are for the former. Advocacy may take the form of:
Supporting agricultural training and development
Advocating water availability
Supporting communication and transportation infrastructure
Encouraging local commerce and employment
Support for banking and judicial systems

Systematic diagnosis for the causes of poverty begins with an analysis of those resources, or capital, that are essential for economic development. Such an analysis generally includes discerning the status of:
Human capital
Healthy, literate citizens who are prepared to be economically active.
Business capital
The machines, facilities and means of transport necessary for productivity.
Infrastructure
Electricity, roads, water, ports and communications systems that are essential for business enterprises.
Natural capital
Rich soils and well-functioning ecosystems that make possible successful agriculture.
Public institution capital
Monetary systems, judicial systems, government services and policies that support economic prosperity.
Knowledge capital
The scientific and technological expertise necessary for productivity.13
Most societies with good harbors, favorable climates, adequate energy sources, educated citizens, and freedom from epidemic diseases have escaped poverty. Communities in extreme poverty generally lack any number of these six forms of capital.

Efforts to improve health of a community must:
Increase literacy and general education
Increase economic development
Effectively promote health through the most potent interventions
Effectively intervene against the leading causes of death and disability
